Confidential first discussion
We ask what is happening now, who is seeking help and whether there is any immediate medical, safety or family concern. Relatives can seek guidance even if the person is not yet ready to talk.

Someone who drinks every morning to prevent shaking needs a different assessment from a person who has lost savings through betting. A young adult spending most nights gaming may need help restoring sleep and family routines; someone using several substances may need urgent medical review first. At ICare, the purpose of the first discussion is to understand the pattern, the risks and what type of help is appropriate.
Families often arrive with an urgent question: does the person need to be admitted? That can only be answered responsibly after considering physical health, withdrawal risks, mental wellbeing, willingness to participate and what support exists at home. Residential treatment can provide structure and separation from familiar triggers, but it is not automatically the only or safest option.
What is alcohol dependence? When might withdrawal be unsafe? What happens in residential rehabilitation?

Addiction-related disorders involve more than doing something frequently. Warning signs can include repeated unsuccessful attempts to stop, a growing loss of control, continuing despite significant harm, secrecy, cravings or the substance or activity taking priority over obligations and relationships. In some conditions, tolerance and physical withdrawal also occur.
Not every difficult habit is an addiction. Gaming disorder and gambling disorder have recognised diagnostic frameworks, while broad labels such as “smartphone addiction” or “Instagram addiction” are often used informally. The assessment should establish actual impairment and consider other causes, rather than assume a diagnosis from a search phrase.
If alcohol, prescribed sedatives or multiple drugs are involved, sudden changes in use can be medically dangerous. A family should not attempt home detox without qualified advice.
Our treatment methodology
We ask what is happening now, who is seeking help and whether there is any immediate medical, safety or family concern. Relatives can seek guidance even if the person is not yet ready to talk.
Relevant history includes substances, quantities, withdrawal episodes, existing medicines, physical and mental health, work, relationships and previous treatment. The level of care should follow risk, not a fixed sales package.
Where withdrawal poses medical risk, qualified clinicians must decide the appropriate monitoring and medicines. Some people need hospital-level services before residential rehabilitation; others do not require detoxification at all.
Treatment may include individual sessions, appropriate group work, relapse-prevention skills, family sessions with consent and support for sleep, exercise and routine. The plan should be reviewed as needs change.
Before returning home, people need a realistic plan for triggers, family conversations, medicines when prescribed, review appointments, work and difficult days. Continuing care matters as much as the first week.
Withdrawal and safety
Withdrawal depends on the substance. Anxiety, sweating, tremor, nausea, insomnia and irritability can occur after reducing alcohol or some medicines. Severe confusion, seizures or hallucinations after heavy alcohol or sedative use require urgent medical assessment. Opioid withdrawal can cause marked distress and dehydration, while overdose may threaten breathing and consciousness. Stimulant withdrawal can involve exhaustion, depression and sleep disturbance.
Gambling and gaming do not produce the same medically dangerous withdrawal syndrome as alcohol or sedatives; someone stopping may nevertheless experience agitation, low mood, craving or distress. We take those reactions seriously while avoiding misleading claims that every behaviour requires detoxification.
Emergency symptoms: seizures, reduced consciousness, breathing difficulty, severe confusion or immediate risk of self-harm require emergency medical services. Do not wait for a routine web enquiry.
Family involvement
Write down observed changes and possible risks without trying to diagnose the person. Discuss safety and practical boundaries; consider the effect on children, employment, finances and caregivers. Financial access may need to be limited in gambling-related crises, while substance concerns may require an urgent medication and withdrawal review.
We encourage conversations that are direct, respectful and specific. The goal is not to win an argument. It is to create a safe opportunity for assessment, consent and decisions the patient can understand. Relatives can also ask about visiting arrangements, updates and what information can lawfully be shared.
Support for families ↗Why ICare Foundation
ICare Foundation receives enquiries from individuals and families across Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai and the wider metropolitan region. The centre’s published contact address is Bungalow No. 13, Soham Gardens, Ghodbunder Road, Thane West, Maharashtra 400607. Families can ask about residential arrangements, counselling, activity schedules, visiting, privacy and aftercare before making a commitment.
We understand that confidentiality is often central to the decision. A person may fear exposure at work or in the community; families may have difficult questions about how communication and consent work. Those questions deserve straightforward answers, including what the centre can provide and when outside medical expertise is necessary.
